This is not to mention the endless variations of dynohubs. There was a time when so many AW s passed through our workshop that I could disassemble them, service them inevitably replacing the clutch and pinion pins and reassemble them in my sleep. Up until the mid s, Sturmey-Archer hubs were manufactured to the very highest tolerances and specification. These hubs were a joy to work on and genuinely seemed to roll on forever. The s in particular seemed to be a golden age of case hardening. Starting in the late s, the quality went gradually but inexorably downhill. It is a harsh truth, but by the mid s Sturmey-Archer hub gears could only properly be regarded as junk.

This is my oldest-numbered currently useable Special Sports frame, V My guess would be that the frame dates to around , based on some other Speedwell numbers I have seen. I carefully used some very fine steel wool, with oil, on the frame and fork, which removed most of the yellowed varnish and, like a restored old painting, the areas of white became clear again. The process improved the colours, but I was extra careful around the decals on the forks and seat tube.
Also, some paint schemes may look better with the varnish left as is.

Thanks for this post, it is so clearly documented and photographed I’m inspired to start stripping one of my hubs! One question though, as the hub that most needs some attention is a Dynohub, I was wondering if you had any experience you could share relating to the risk of demagnetising the hub? Now how do we turn an AW3 into a 3SX? Having seen both of these hubs up close, it seems almost certain that the innards of the dynamo mechanism are identical, with the AWG also squeezing in a 3 speed gear mechanism too.
The instructions suggest that the dynamo mechanism can be removed as a single piece without demagnetisation being an issue. After that, the rest should be the same as the AW.
